2004 Ranking of Top 500 Universities.
upon getting this email, i promised myself that i have to blog on this.
check out http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/ranking.htm
ever wonder where your university ranked? fortunately, my 30 years old university managed to get in the top 200! am quite impressed ha. i guess, it is one of the reason why our department is kind of strict with published works.
anyway, am kind of busy lately...so ill just blog on how i came to know this site and some random thoughts on it...
my day went this way today...
seminar- had this usual 9-11:30 weekly lab "zemi".. all the presentation was in japanese. the other day, our associate professor asked me how many percent do i understand in my labmates' japanese presentation, and i say maybe 5-10%. and honestly, it can be really frustrating since i cannot comment nor understand their presentation- such wouldnt happen if am in an english speaking nation.
lunch- had lunch with my other foreign labmate who go frustrated cause we need to resume our seminar session after. and he asked me if i know which university in the world ranked first. i told him it is harvard. and am right without even seeing the study which he later forwarded to me. and he felt bad that there was no school from developing countries who managed to be in the top. told him that it is for obvious reason-lack of resources.
seminar - 5-6:30, we had a continuation and this time with one english presentation. i can feel his frustration upon seeing that one of the prof. was actually sleeping! golly! while it is quite normal for some japanese students to actually sleep when there is a class...i still think it is rude. more so if a teacher is doing it too. anyway, i wonder if such happens in other japanese university who happened to be ranked among the top? but then come to think of it, my professor was a graduate of the number 1 (that's according to survey) school in Asia!
o well, enough of this rants. anyway, it's really nice to know that this study was done by a chinese university. like other blogs on china (especially on hazel's kwaderno), i agree that this country is really something to watch out for. infact, i told a friend that i think when ill have my kids, i think ill encourage them to study the chinese language. aside from spanish, i think chinese is one of the most useful language in the world (cmon, their population is in billions!). ops, discussing language is another blog article, huh?
going back to this topic on the ranking of top 500 universities- i wonder if there will a university who will try to rank the top 500 universities in developing countries? hmmn..nice research proposal huh?
